Founded in 2015 as Aljo’s Chess Dojo, long time chess instructor, player and enthusiast Alex Johnson began incorporating his passion for logic, geometry and martial arts into his after school and summer chess programs.
While taking a martial arts class, Alex noticed how enthusiastically students responded to belt promotions after achieving new self defense skills. Seeing how effective this was as a motivation tool and metric of progress Alex decided to bring this concept into his chess classroom setting.
Incorporating the many tools, techniques and drills Alex had previously used to train National trophy winners and tournament champions, many lessons and drills were restructured to effectively integrate into the new training format.
With new booklets, bandanas and classstructure, Alex was surprised how quickly students adapted to the new systemworking hard to achieve their next bandana rank. Not only did student feel a sense ofachievement, it was obvious to students and parents a like the students hadunlocked a new level of chess competence.
After a relocation to Chattanooga and a brief tenure in the corporate world Alex decided to return to the classroom as a substitute teacher in Hamilton County. After working with many students throughout the county it because quite obvious Chattanooga would be a great city to rekindle the chess dojo, so here we are today with…. The Chattanooga Chess Dojo.
